Conclusion of Wat Norea Peaceful Children’s Home II Handwashing Station Project – Cambodia
The project was to create a hygiene station near the communal bathrooms for the children to wash their hands and brush their teeth.
This project was started and completed within two weeks of receiving the funds. First was the construction of the hygiene station and then the workshop, teaching the children the proper way to wash their hands and brush their teeth.
This project created a clean station for over 50 children to wash their hands before meals and after using the bathroom, as well as a place to brush their teeth. The pictures amply show the successful construction of the station.
Through the workshop, two host country nationals trained three high school students and residents of the orphanage. Set in place were three tasks for the students. First, Sophy, a grade 11 student, will be the leader of teeth brushing after meals. Each child was given a toothbrush, but Sophy will be charge of looking after the toothbrushes for the smaller children. Sothea, a grade 12 student, chose the task of hand washing leader. She is leading the children in hand washing before every meal, which will decrease the likelihood of diarrhea. Finally, Rong, also a grade 12 student, chose to monitor the cleaning and maintenance of the hygiene station.
The children were very pleased with the station and the workshop. The director noted that the children are really enjoying washing their hands and brushing their teeth. They have also taken it upon themselves to do these tasks, thus changing their habits and improving their personal hygiene.
