Soon after the project was finished, the political situation deteriorated in Kyrgyzstan, and Cameron was unable to return to the community. Conditions have now stabilized to some extent, and it is hoped that the Peace Corps will be able to continue to provide assistance in the country.
The process began with the excavation of the pit by the school. The director brought in a steam shovel and dug an enormous pit that has sufficient capacity to serve for years to come.
Concrete was used to line the walls of the pit in order to prevent them from falling in, thereby ensuring sustainability.
Two low-tech solutions were used to save money on the project. Concrete was formed by using a metal table from the school. Also, a platform for the outhouse was formed by salvaging two pillars from one of the nearby Soviet-era ruins.
When the outhouse was completed, it was moved to the lyceum, and situated over the pit, where the roof was added and the structure was finished so that it will endure the harsh winters in the location.
