Conclusion of Stonehenge Water Project – Jamaica

This project has been completed under the direction of Peace Corps Volunteer Gavin Finnegan. To read about the beginning of the project, CLICK HERE.

The project was to double the water storage capacity at the Orange Hill All Age School, and also improve the management of water in the community of Stonehenge.

Gavin reports:

As a result of this project, Orange Hill All Age School in Stonehenge, St. James was equipped with a 1,000-gallon water tank and two water fountain heads, and the surrounding community members received float lock-off valves.

After a heavy rain two sections of the road leading to Stonehenge were washed away and an additional two sections were covered in a mud slides. Completion of the project was delayed for one week while the road was being cleared. Thankfully, the delay was minimal because of the assistance of a Stonehenge resident who provided transportation of the 1,000-gallon tank in his 4×4 truck free of charge.

Water storage capabilities have greatly increased positive sanitation practices within the school. Children have access to flushing toilets, a hand washing station, and water fountains every day at school. This is a tremendous improvement. Gone are the days when students would be sent home if they had to use the bathroom. Gone are the days students became dangerously dehydrated in the tropical heat.

Gavin reports on how the project was received:

I am constantly thanked for the improved water system at Orange Hill All School but all thanks goes to Appropriate Projects and Six Senses Resorts & Spas. A local Rastafarian told me, “Big yourself up, you brought life to the school”. And the principal, students and teachers wanted me to send their deep gratitude for the tank.

For the first few days after the water tank and water fountains were installed not a single child was thirsty at school. In fact, due to the students’ fascination with using the water fountains, the only problems we encountered were the persistent requests to use the bathroom.

We extend our gratitude to Gavin for carrying out this project, which is obviously having a significant impact on the school and the community.

We again wish to thank The Soneva SLOW LIFE Trust for providing the funding for this project.
