The project was to build 6 latrines at the high school in Salémata.
Jessica reports:
The Salémata Lycee Latrine project has now been completed.
The local masons of the community of Salémata have spent the last few months building a six stall bathroom for Salémata’s new high school. The male and female bathrooms stalls are separate and the stalls have three latrines each.
Finding sand for the construction posed a problem in the beginning. The villagers had to go to other surrounding villages in search of it.
All materials were purchased in the regional capital of Kedougou and then we had to arrange transport to Salémata.
Once the digging was complete, the masons capped the latrines.
Bricks were made out of the cement to provide extra reinforcement and durability of the bathrooms.
The villagers have shown their grateful support since the construction. The village has planned an inauguration ceremony for the high school as well as for the new latrines to show their appreciation.
These new bathrooms will benefit over 750 students this school year. The community of Salémata is now more conscious of the wellbeing and health of the students, the teachers, and school staff.
I am proud of the work of the Salémata community and grateful to Appropriate Projects. As a result, the students will now be able to stay in school and not have to go home or far from school grounds to use a bathroom facility.
