Conclusion of Sakagne Latrine Project – Senegal

This project has been completed under the direction of Peace Corps Volunteer Andrew Oberstadt. To read about the beginning of the project, CLICK HERE.

The project was to build 14 latrines in the village.

Andrew reports:

The participants started by gathering rocks and sand, digging their pits, and constructing wooden frames to build the cement platforms.

My counterpart Cheikh Gaye and I negotiated the price of the materials at the local hardware store, and a voucher for all the materials was given.

The following day around ten people in the Sakagne Garden and Health Collective took horse carts to Guinguineo to transport the baggage to my compound in Sakagne where it was distributed to the recipients over the following week.

Most of the recipients made the standard cement-lined pit latrine but several of them added extra materials to their latrines making them larger or adding cement enclosures with doors.

The people of Sakagne are eager to show off their completed latrines with pride and thank Appropriate Projects, Peace Corps, and the Six Senses Resorts and Spas for their generosity.

We again wish to thank The Soneva SLOW LIFE Trust for providing the funding for this project.
