Conclusion of Patar Lia School Latrine Project – Senegal

This project has been completed under the direction of Peace Corps Volunteer Stephanie Shumsky. To read about the beginning of this project, CLICK HERE.

The project was to construct six latrines at the school.

Stephanie reports:

The latrine project at the primary school in Patar Lia has been completed! Construction finished up just this week and we’ll start covering the cement structures with hygiene-themed murals and implement the sanitation lessons as soon as the schools open next month.

During construction the project design was marginally altered, going from the previously planned single block of six latrines to two separate blocks with three latrines each, still for a total of six latrines sharing one septic tank.

The expedient construction technique, using a common tank, succeeded in quickly bringing essential sanitation services to the school. The design will ensure easy upkeep and maintenance in the future.

We again wish to thank The Soneva SLOW LIFE Trust for providing the funding for this successful project.
