The project was originally designed to build 25 latrines in the community. However, it evolved to be much more.
Ryan reports:
The infrastructure project in Paraxaj started out with the idea of building 25 latrines. However, through successful fundraising campaigns and the eagerness and cooperation of the community, we were able to build not only 25 latrines, but also 25 cement floors, and 25 wood-burning stoves.
Contracts were signed by all members of the families that participated in the project to use, and appropriately maintain, the latrines, floors, and stoves.
Under the supervision of an experienced local mason, each family built their own latrine, placed their own cement floor, and constructed their own wood-burning stove.
The Asociación Civil para el Desarrollo Integral de Guatemala was an integral part of the project, and since the completion of the project the group continues to monitor the use of the latrines.
Overall, over 144 community members directly benefited from the project while countless members were affected indirectly.
All in all, the project was an amazing success. There were many hard times, and it was not a walk in the park, but the effort required was well worth it, especially given the benefits that resulted.
This project brought the community together, and not only built infrastructure, but strengthened community bonds through the development of social capital.
