The project was to install rain gutters along the roof of the Nyamanga Dispensary and the staff house.
Elise reports:
After receiving the Water Charity funds the Chairman of the Nyamanga Dispensary committee and I hired a local technician to purchase the gutter materials, shape the gutters from the metal sheets, and transport and install them at the clinic.
It took the technician two days to bend the metal sheets and bind them together to form the 130 feet of gutters needed for the clinic building and the staff house. It then took the technician and his assistant, two days to fasten them to the two buildings.
The community also donated two bags of cement to build blocks around the base of the tank to stabilize it from the wind.
We also purchased a tap for the tank which the technician also installed for us. In total the project was finished in about 5 days, and we were exactly within budget.
The Chairman, clinic staff, and the chief are all extremely happy to finally have the tank be put to use, as it had been sitting idle for almost two years. The nurse-in-charge told me that even these small improvements ease the burden of an understaffed and overworked clinic so that they can focus on treating patients and not worry about accessing water, or sourcing funds to finish facility construction projects.
