The project was to provide accessible water taps in the village.
Lucas reports:
The Nessa water project has been completed and was a huge success. With the help of Water Charity and very kind donors, the community and I extended the main water line to serve a section of the village that previously had no access to running water.
The Village Headmen, Village Development Committee, and I organized the purchasing of necessary materials, transportation, skilled labor, and digging of the trench that the pipes were installed in.
The whole experience ran smoothly and was extremely gratifying. Villagers were cooperative in raising the funds they agreed to contribute and also worked together to dig the trench.
On the morning that we agreed to start work a few villagers began digging at 4:30 am and by 6:00 am we had over 50 people working together to dig the 1,000 meter trench.
The large turnout made it possible for the plumbers to begin installing the new line by 10:00 am and by 2:00 pm the new system was up and running.
I think the most humbling part of my service thus far was the moment when we turned on the first tap. Almost immediately villagers came running out of their huts with large buckets of water on their heads yelling MADZI! MADZI! MADZI! (water! water! water!).
People in this section of the community have easy access to clean water for the first time in their entire lives. No more going to the river to wash clothes, no more long lines at water taps, and most importantly no more traveling long distances carrying heavy buckets of water.
