This project has been completed under the direction of Peace Corps Volunteer (PCV) David Engleman, with the help of fellow-PCV Josh Hunter and others. To read about the start of this project, CLICK HERE.
The project was to add a bio-sand filter and storage tank to the existing water storage tank. The goal was to provide a filtration system to purify the water collected in the parish tank up the hill and make safe water available to the 250 people at the school.
The project involved the construction of two platforms, for the filter and the additional tank, the construction of the filter, and the connection of all the elements using PVC pipe.
The most difficult part was the preparation and cleaning of the sand and gravel of proper quality and size, taking days to complete. Constructing the actual filter and PVC parts took only a few hours.
Josh reported that the staff and students were excited about the project. The school has been fully briefed on the tuning of the flow rate, testing of the water, and maintenance of the system.
