Conclusion of Matakossi Latrine Project – Senegal

This project has been completed under the direction of Peace Corps Volunteer Frank Guzzardo.

The project was originally designed to build 15 latrines in Matakossi. However, it turned out that only 10 could be completed at this time within the given budget.

Frank reports:

The Matakossi Latrine Project was a success. 10 latrines were built in Matakossi, with more planned for the years to come. I underestimated the price of the latrine materials and the cost of transport, so instead of 15 latrines, only 10 were built. This is acceptable, because only 10 families were able to dig the pit for their latrine in time before the rains came.

Seven men in the community now have the knowhow and experience to build ventilated latrines. This project also brought the importance of ventilated latrines to the forefront. Once families saw how easy and relatively inexpensive it is to have a latrine in their compound, everyone was talking about how next year they will build their very own without any outside assistance.

Hopefully, next dry season, families in Matakossi will continue the effort to ensure that every person in the village will be using a ventilated latrine.

I want to thank Appropriate Projects again on behalf of Matakossi for supplying the funds for this project.

We, in turn wish to thank Frank for completing this project, and again thank the Elmo Foundation for providing the funding.
