Conclusion of Madrassa Latrine Project – Morocco

This project has been completed under the direction of Peace Corps Volunteer Melanie Kondrat.  To read about the beginning of the project, CLICK HERE.

The project was to build 3 latrines and 2 washbasins at the school.

Melanie reports:

We completed the Medrassa Bouadia latrines and health education project in Morocco.  It went really well!

We built 3 latrines and 2 sinks at Medrassa Bouadia, a small village primary school located a couple of kilometers from Afourer.

The building and related facilities were built under the direction of the Association des Parente Et Tuteure des Eleves a Bouadia.

Conclusion of Madrassa Latrine Project – MoroccoA septic tank was dug and the building constructed.  A water supply was established and the fixtures were installed and connected to the tank.

Water Charity funds were used for the purchase of fixtures, including 3 sqat toilets, and 2 sinks and faucets.  They also paid for materials, including iron, rocks, bricks, cement, sand, gravel, tile, paint and piping and fittings, and. for the skilled masonry, plumbing, and electrical work.

The community and school contributed the unskilled labor in the construction of the septic tank and building, rocks and bricks to create a pathway from the school to the bathroom, and the meals for the workers.

In an effort to make the project sustainable, when the toilets were finished we held the health fair at the school.  We had about 65 kids attend, along with various parents and community members. Leading the health fair were 10 kids from the local high school and university, as well as 3 other Peace Corps Volunteers. They taught lessons on dental hygiene, hand washing, nutrition, environment, and physical education.

THANK YOU Water Charity (or as we say in Morocco, ‘Chokran bzaf!’) for your support of this project.  I can say with honesty that without your assistance, this project would not have happened as planned!  So again, we can’t thank you enough.  It means so much to this community.

We, in turn extend our thanks to Melanie for completing this project and to Tony Young, who provided the funding.
