The project was to build a rainwater catchment system for the school, consisting of a water tank, gutters, and piping.
Thanks again for the support from Water Charity! We have completed the building of a rainwater catchment tank for the primary school just in time for the rainy season to begin to fill it up.
For the development of this project, we used a water committee created within the village, which consisted of a chairman of the village, the headmaster at the primary school, a chairman of the committee, and a couple of committee members. This committee was in charge of writing out the budget, getting the supplies, hiring the labor, getting the students and committee members to help provide village contributions, and attending weekly meetings to assess the project of the work.
This project has been a great opportunity for village members to work together for the benefit every student and teacher in Mfuto village. There were challenges we overcame, such as time management and not budgeting enough cement originally. The committee members worked well together to ensure the project’s success and were in charge of the entire process.
We are all proud of the hard work that went into completing the water catchment tank, and all community members of Mfuto village are extremely appreciative of the support we received from Water Charity.
The rain season has just begun, which will fill up the water catchment tank. The school plans to keep the tank filled throughout the rain season, and make sure it is full when going into the dry season to assist with water shortage issues for the months of May – October.
The school has also set up handwashing stations and plans to plant a permagarden in January when the school reopens. This water will not only provide water to the students and teachers, but will enable the handwashing station and permagarden’s success.
Thank you for this amazing opportunity to provide water to the students of Lusonje Primary School.
We are grateful to Stephanie for completing this excellent project.
