Conclusion of La-Palma Self Help Group Tank Project – Kenya

The project was to construct a drip irrigation system to supply water for the group’s garden.
On August 12th I went with two of the La Palma group members to purchase a 5,000 L tank and PVC pipe for their green house. We checked prices at 4 shops and found a tank for 34,000 KSH. The original plan was to have the tank delivered the next day, but instead the owner said he had to deliver it right then. So, he took the tank to the group before I was able to go with him.
I still went to visit the group and watch the installation the next day as planned. On the 13th I walked up to Munyeki Village to meet with the group and to take photographs of the tank and group members. The group had built a wooden stand and painted it to prevent termites. They also showed me where they would build a stone stand to put the tank on top of later as a more permanent solution.
The group worked together to place the tank on the wooden stand. They said that with the rains coming as often as they have that the tank should be filled in just 1 week!
The group was to travel to Nairobi to obtain the rest of the materials for their irrigation system for the green house at the end of the week. All of these materials would be purchased with their own group savings!!
This group was amazing to work with and went to show us how sometimes just a little help can lead to really big successful projects!
Brittany has informed us that she has now left Kenya. We are grateful to her for completing the project, and wish her the best. We again extend our thanks to Michael and Carla Boyle for providing the funding.
