This project has been completed under the direction of Peace Corps Volunteer Lyndsey Rozzi.

The project was to provide running water to the kindergarten to enable sanitation and hygiene.

Lyndsey reports:

We are pleased to report that the Izvoare Water Project has been completed! After three weeks of work we were able to bring running water from the well to a sink in the kindergarten.

Currently, the kindergarten is closed for annual repairs. The employees, including the teachers and the director, are enjoying having access to the running water for technical purposes as they work to clean and repair the building.

Two meetings were held with the parents to inform them of the project and gain support. The parents proceeded to collect a 30% monetary donation. This, along with the funds from Appropriate Projects allowed us to purchase the necessary materials to efficiently complete the project.

Ten parents volunteered their time to perform the labor of digging the 100 meter ditch and installing the pump in the well. A specialist drilled through the concrete wall where the electric and water lines enter the building. He also installed the water tank and an outlet for the electricity. Special measures were taken to properly place the pipes, ensuring that they will not freeze in the winter so that water can be accessed year round.

Phase one of our project created much awareness and interest from the community about the need for better bathroom facilities and access to running water at the kindergarten. Our next step is to provide hot water to the sink by using solar energy. Once this is complete the project will be taken over by the mayor’s office with community support. We are happy to have sparked this process and have created community awareness.

My partner and I will be conducting lessons for the kindergarten classes on proper hand washing methods. The parents and employees of the kindergarten are pleased with the success of the project and looking forward to continuing the process of creating safe and healthy restrooms. We offer much appreciation to Appropriate Projects and those who donated money. Thank you from Izvoare!

We wish to thank Lyndsey for completing this project, and again extend our gratitude to The Soneva SLOW LIFE Trust for providing the funding.
