Conclusion of Barrio Union Buenavista Water Project – Mexico

This project has been completed under the direction of Tamara Brennan, Ph.D., of The Sexto Sol Center for Community Action. To read about the start of the project, CLICK HERE.

The project was designed to build a water system to serve the needs of the community.

Tamara reports:

The water has finally come to Barrio Union Buenavista and the people could not be happier. This new system replaces an old hose of inferior size and quality that was constantly in need of maintenance. With good quality material now in place the water system will serve the community for decades.

In October, we delivered forty rolls of 100-meter-long heavy duty two-inch diameter hose to a point high above the City of Motozintla. The men got to work the very next day. They coordinated their efforts as teams worked simultaneously on different parts of the 4-kilometers stretch. Even though it was hard work, the men were in good spirits as they worked, knowing that the constant worry about water that they had endured for years was coming to an end.

They buried the hose in a trench to protect it from the sun and thirsty animals. Each joint connecting 100-meter lengths of hose together was reinforced with metal bands so it can withstand the water pressure as water descends from the mountain above.

The upgraded water system provides a good amount of water that will serve the families well, making it possible for young people to establish their own households in due time. It will allow people to water small vegetable gardens in the dry season and plant fruit trees.

The day we gathered to watch the water arrive to the neighborhood, people cheered and made speeches. The families are deeply grateful for the generosity of Michael and Carla Boyle and to Water Charity for making this project possible.

We extend our thanks to Tamara for completing this important project, and again express our gratitude to the Boyles for their continued support of this great work.
