The project was to bring water to a convenient location on the school grounds and install a sink next to the school bathroom building.
Colin reports:
I accompanied volunteer workers to the regional center in Akhaltsikhe to retrieve funds and purchase supplies, which included the following : 70 meters of plastic piping, three 35 lb bags of concrete powder, 16 concrete blocks, two boxes of tile, tile sealant, and plumbing fixtures (two L joints, faucet, cut off valve).
The work commenced with the excavation of the old piping and the digging of a foundation for the new faucet. 6 workers and I completed digging and set the concrete foundation that day.
The next day, the new pipes were connected to the public water supply and the structure of the sink was installed. That evening, tile was applied to the exterior of the sink structure. Because insufficient tile was purchased initially I left the worksite to buy another box of tile. The final tile was applied and the surface treated with sealant the following day.
We discovered that the valve connecting the public supply to the water pipes was broken. Because this was a public infrastructure issue, we notified regional ministry authorities and they dispatched a worker to replace this part.
The new sink is now fully functional and in use.
Community members expressed relief at finally having a reliable source of fresh water on school grounds. The Physical Education teacher was particularly pleased that by replacing the piping, the athletic field would no longer be flooded whenever the water was on.
