C.E.M. de Kaymor Latrine Project – Senegal

Location
Kaymor, Arrondissement de Nioro du Rip, Region de Kaolack, Senegal

Community Description
Kaymor is a village of over 2,000 people. It is located in the Peanut Basin of Senegal and the majority of the people work in farming. It is the capital of its Rural Community and is located over 25 kilometers from the closest town. It is a place where many surrounding villages come to congregate, do commerce, and go to school.

The language of the village is Wolof, which is also the name of the primary ethnic group. There is also a large number of Pulaar language and ethnic groups in surrounding villages that come in for school and work. They are nearly 100 percent Muslim.

Kaymor is home to a highly respected religious leader, a “Grand Marabout”, and boasts a yearly religious celebration, a “Gammou”, every spring that attracts thousands of visitors to congregate with the “Grand Marabout”.

C.E.M. de Kaymor is a junior high school, serving 350 students, on the outskirts of the village. It has no restroom facilities.

Project Description
This project is to build a set of latrines at the school.

A mason from the community will be in charge of the technical work.

Students and other community members will contribute their labor to assuring the project will be completed successfully.

A large septic tank will be dug and platforms made for the tops of the latrines.

Sand will be donated from the community to make cinder blocks, which will be made on-site to construct the two-room building.

Water Charity funds will be used to purchase supplies, such as cement, tin roofing and two Eastern-style toilets, as well as well for the labor of the mason.

Handwashing facilities, as well as health and hygiene training, will be provided for the students.
