Community Description
Chum Kiri, founded in 1993, is the newest and poorest district in the southern province of Kampot. Khmer Rouge forces did not concede defeat in this area until as late as 1998. Due to the prolonged hostilities in the region, development has been extraordinarily slow compared to other districts in Kampot province.
Located 45 kilometers from the provincial capital and 12 km from the nearest highway, the majority of families survive on subsistence agriculture, and few venture outside of the district due to the decrepit road conditions.
Road conditions are now improving in the district center, due to a massive road project started in recent months, but these changes have not yet affected Angmotreysatram, which is a farming village located about 10 kilometers from the only town and market in the district.
Angmotreysatram Primary School serves 414 students (grades 1 to 6) with 8 staff members. Currently, the school is without water.
The pond on the school grounds has gone dry due to the small amount of rainfall last wet season. The situation was made much worse when the hand pump on the well quit working.
Project Description
This project will enlarge the current water supply pond and fix the hand-pumped well at the school.
The larger portion of the project is to enlarge the existing water supply pond. The current pond is 4 meters by 8 meters and is 1 meter deep (32 cubic meters maximum capacity).
Water Charity funds will be used to hire a track hoe excavator and pay for the operator’s time. The pond will be dug a minimum of 3 meters deep. The final pond will be at least 10 meters by 7 meters (210 cubic meters capacity). This will give the community at least 6.5 times as much water supply, but historically there is enough seep into the deeper ponds that they don’t go dry except during the worst droughts.
The second portion of the project is to repair the hand-pumped well. Water Charity funds will pay for the parts and labor. Any shortfall will be paid from the school budget.
Project Impact
642 people will benefit from the project, including 414 students, 8 staff, and 220 villagers who use the school water supplies as a primary or secondary water source.

Subsidiary benefits of the project will be:
1 – Increased fish production in the enlarged pond,
2 – Increased water convolvulus (a flowering plant used in Cambodian cooking) production in the enlarged pond, and
3 – The ability to start a school garden and agricultural education program due to the plentiful water supply during the entire year.

This represents a new record for the number of projects completed in partnership with Water Charity for a serving Peace Corps Volunteer.
