Projects In Alphabetical Order
Located in the southeastern corner of Senegal, 15 km from the border with Guinea and 30 kilometers from the regional capital, Thianguey is a small, primarily agricultural village.
Comprised of about 50 compounds, Thianguey spreads over 3 kilometers, with large agricultural fields in between. It is primarily made up of Guinean refugees and all are Pula Futa.
Work toward full latrine availability started with the Thianguey Latrine Project – Senegal, in which 16 latrines were built in the village.
The success of the previous project encouraged some families of recent arrivals and in the surrounding bush area to dig latrine pits as well.
Following a very successful training by La Lumiere, a new vigor to combat public health problems has arisen. Community members have been appointed 'health police' and look out for certain activities, including open-air defection (particularly inside in village.)
A recent community meeting ascertained that some areas still lack latrines, such as the village-run pre-school, the health post, the teacher's house, and 7 private residences.
In addition, a small number of latrines built in the early 1990's have begun to degrade, and are in need of repair.
This project is to build 10 latrines and repair another 6 latrines around the village.
The tools, and some left-over materials, remain from the previous project.
Six masons, who were trained in latrine masonry, led by Lamin Toure, are available to perform the work on this project.
Water Charity funds will be used to purchase rebar, cement, and wire, and will pay the transportation costs and a small construction fee for the masons.
380 people will benefit from the project.
Peace Corps Volunteer Directing Project
This project is the final step toward elimination of open-air defecation in the community. Along with the previous work, this will yield tremendous results in the reduction of disease due to lack of adequate sanitation.
