Saré Pathé Bouya Middle School Well Project – Senegal

Saré Pathé Bouya Middle School Well Project – SenegalLocation
Saré Pathé Bouya, Department of Kolda, Region of Kolda, Senegal

Community Description
Saré Pathé Bouya is a village of approximately 500 people located in the region of Kolda in southern Senegal. It is about 7 km north of National Route 6 near Mampatim. Most of the population belongs to the Mandinka ethnic group, but at least two small compounds are predominately Pulaar speaking, as are the surrounding villages.

The population of Saré Pathé is distributed over 29 compounds, ranging in size from 5 to 48 people, with an average compound size of about 17 people.

The local economy relies primarily on subsistence farming, with some sale of vegetables, cotton, peanuts and other crops. There is one elementary school and a middle school, as well as a health post serving Saré Pathé Bouya and the surrounding Pulaar communities.

Saré Pathé Bouya Middle School Well Project – SenegalSaré Pathé Bouya Middle School has been officially open since October of 2010, although until October 2012 all classes were held in temporary bamboo structures. An NGO that has been active in the community, HOPE 87, built permanent classrooms last year, but the school is still without a water source or latrines. Students are obliged to bring water from home, which is extremely difficult, especially since most of the students come from villages other than Saré Pathé Bouya, some as far as 12 km away.

Project Description
This project is to build a well to serve the Saré Pathé Bouya Middle School.

The well will be approximately 30 meters deep. It will be lined as the digging progresses, every few meters, with cement. At the surface there will be a wall and a cement cover with a square metal trap door that can be opened to draw water by pulley and bucket.

There is a plan to install an India style pump that will be used to fill the buckets. Runoff will be captured in a cemented area.

The teachers and principal have already organized to start digging the well on the premises, and local well diggers have been hired and begun the work.

Saré Pathé Bouya Middle School Well Project – SenegalWater Charity funds will pay for the cement and iron needed to properly line the well and ensure the cleanliness of the water. HOPE 87 will provide the well cover, pulley system, and pump once the well is dug and lined.

Project Impact
At least 300 students and 15 staff members will directly benefit from the project. The well will also be a water source for nearby compounds, particularly as the village expands in the direction of the middle school in the next few years.
