Projects In Alphabetical Order
Njabini is an agricultural town high in the Aberdare Mountain Range in Nyandarua County. The community is mainly comprised of the Kikuyu people, who are hard working and strive toward higher education. The most common line of work is farming of potatoes, cabbage, kale, spinach, carrots, and maize.
Almost every man and woman in Njabini is a small-scale farmer, making a living on what he or she can grow. It is always a struggle for these farmers to send all their children to school, feed the whole family, and have any money left over for leisure activities or to invest in changes that can improve quality of life.
The Njabini Youth Centre has as its mission to provide a place where youth can learn and spend time doing productive activities. However, it is currently not in full use.
One of the activities at the centre is a tree nursery, which has just been started. However, it is difficult to maintain this effort without the availability of a source of water.
This project is to build a rainwater catchment and storage system at the Njabini Youth Centre.
A 6,000 liter water tank (Kentank) will be purchased and installed. Gutters will be installed, and piping will connect the gutters to the tank.
Water will be piped to the tree nursery, about 50 yards away. An irrigation system will be installed to water the seedlings in the tree nursery.
Water Charity funds will be used to purchase the tank and other materials, including gutters, piping, cement, gravel, sand, and wire mesh.
Water Charity funds will also be used to pay for the skilled labor to construct the base upon which the tank will be installed, to install the gutters on the roof of the centre, and install the piping to the tank.
Volunteers of the group Beautify Aberdare will provide labor for the piping to the tree nursery from the tank.
The trees will be grown to be sold as an income-generating activity, as well as to plant in schools and around town to beautify and provide environmental awareness.
An education component will be implemented when the trees are ready to be planted in schools
800 people will benefit from the project.
Peace Corps Volunteer Directing Project
This project is necessary to ensure the success of the tree nursery, and will also play a part in restoring activities at the centre.
