Projects In Alphabetical Order
Chhouk district is the second largest district in the southern province of Kampot. Chhouk was one of the strongholds during the Khmer Rouge regime and was one of the last areas to be liberated from Khmer Rouge control when the Cambodian Civil War ended in 1998.
For over 25 years during the Khmer Rouge reign all schools were closed and turned into communal eating and sleeping areas, and basic education including reading and writing was discouraged. Today most of the schools have been reopened and Chhouk now has a high school, 4 lower secondary schools, and 22 primary schools.
Nereay is located in the Eastern half of Chhouk district, 52 kilometers from Kampot town on recently completed National Highway 3, and 138 km from Phnom Penh. The new road has increased mobility among the population but there are still many families who have never left the district.
Many of the students must commute over 5 kilometers every day to attend school, and do not have the luxury to go home during breaks to use the bathroom.
This project is to expand the sanitation capacity of Nereay Secondary School by constructing an additional stand-alone latrine building with two toilets to serve the staff and students of the school.
The latrine will be located 10 meters behind the school. It will be constructed with bricks covered with stucco, and sheltered by an aluminum roof. The toilets will be ventilated concrete vaults that are common in the rural areas. Water will be provided by large water tanks and supplemented with cisterns and rain runoff.
Unskilled labor will be supplied by the school staff and local villagers. Skilled labor and overall construction of the latrine will be completed by contractors, who will use local materials.
Water Charity funds will be used to pay the contractors and purchase building materials, including bricks, cement, aluminum roofing, toilet basins, doors, wooden beams, tiles, sewage tanks, pipes, and drains.
The school director, Mr. Chea Kosal, will oversee the construction and be responsible for the future maintenance and repair. He will also raise additional funds needed to complete the project.
260 students and 17 staff members will benefit from the project.
Peace Corps Volunteer Directing Project
This is a necessary infrastructure project for the school. It will have a significant impact on the health and wellbeing of the students and staff.
