Kasinje Borehole Repair Project - Malawi

Kasinje Borehole Project - MalawiLocation
Kasinje 1, Ntcheu District, Malawi

Community Description
236 people in 62 households in Kasinje village are now relying on a local river for their water source, as their borehole is now broken. Women are walking 2 km each way to get to the river, and drinking water that is unsafe.

The Ntcheu District Health Center has no supply of chlorine at the moment, and the water that villagers drink is the same water in which, just meters upstream, children are bathing and mothers are washing clothes.

Project Description
This project is to repair the pump on the borehole at Kasinje.

The project is being implemented under the direction of the Kasinje Health Committee.

Kasinje Borehole Project - MalawiThis project is considered major borehole maintenance, so it will be carried out by a professional from the district. The labor cost is being funded by the community.

The borehole has 3 broken rods that transfer water from the well to the spout and three rods that are in very bad shape. Most interior parts need to be replaced including the foot valves, bush bearings, and hanger pins.

The borehole has already been disassembled and is just waiting to be put back together with new parts, which will be paid for with funds from Water Charity.

The community has already cleaned the borehole soak pit and built a brick skirting to help improve the lifespan of the "new" borehole.

Project Impact
62 families, comprised of 236 people, who use the borehole as their main source of water, will benefit from the project.

Comments
Rainy season brings many diseases such as cholera, malaria, and diarrheal diseases. The repair of this borehole will allow the residents to drink safe water, and is expected to reduce disease and the rate of mortality, especially among the young and vulnerable.
