This project is made possible through the partnership of WATER CHARITY and the NATIONAL PEACE CORPS ASSOCIATION.

Location

Kandia settlement of Kijungu, Kiteto district, Manyara region, Tanzania

Community Description
The Maasai settlement of Kandia is located 12 km away from the nearest water tap in the center of Kijungu village.

Problem Addressed
The women of Kandia must walk 2 hours to fetch water from the tap for their families and livestock, wait in line, and spend an addition 2 hours on the return trip. With the increase in Maasai maintaining a long-term presence, there are now over 1,000 people living in Kandia, including a large number of children. The lack of available water is a major cause of food insecurity.

Project Description
This project is to build a deep borehole well in Kandia to make water available in the settlement.

The well will be drilled to a depth of about 150 meters. Piping will be inserted into the well, and a pump and generator will be attached.

A tap, surrounded by a concrete pad for the users to stand on while filling containers, will provide comfortable access. A proper means for dealing with the water runoff will be built.

Kandia Deep Borehole Project - TanzaniaThe water will be used for drinking, cooking, sanitation, irrigation, and for the livestock.

A tank and a trough for the watering of the cattle are envisioned as a future project for the community

The community ordered and paid for a preliminary survey to determine the best location of the well.

A water committee has been established consisting of eight members of Kandia. The members will rotate the tasks of overseeing the process and managing funds.

The drilling company will guarantee that water will be reached and provide an adequate supply for some time into the future.

A Rowara 5.5 horsepower pump, made in Italy, powered by a 10 kva diesel generator, will be purchased and installed.

The community has raised 6,600,000 TZS as a local contribution to the project. A fee will be charged for use of the well to accumulate funds to pay for the fuel for the generator and perform necessary maintenance and repairs.

Water Charity funds will be used for the purchase of specified equipment and materials as well as the cost of skilled labor.

The entire project is scheduled for completion 2 weeks after work is started.

Project Impact
1,000 people in the community, as well as possibly 500 members of surrounding Maasai communities who may be found herding in the area, will benefit from the project.

Monitoring and Maintenance
The community will create a committee of six members to oversee the maintenance of the well, pump, and generator to ensure sustainability.

Comments
Women who have been relieved of the task of hauling water great distances will be able to devote their time to more productive activities. The water source will reduce the conflict between pastoralists and agriculturalist, by establishing a safe area for watering cattle far from neighboring fields. The water available for the crops will improve food security for the community.

This program is part of the Water Charity and National Peace Corps Association East Africa Water and Sanitation Program.
