Projects In Alphabetical Order
Mikai village, Kakelo location, Oyugis town, Nyanza region, Kenya
Kakelo Based Integrated Support is a Community Based Organization (C.B.O) coordinated by local Manager, Zachary Juma. The mission is to improve the food nutrition, provide counseling, and advocate for and improve the quality life of widows and orphans living with HIV/AIDS in Kakelo location.
In Nyanza region, women and girls have the duty to fetch water for family and cattle. They walk long distances, about 10 to 15 kilometers, to collect water from the nearest sources. These are usually contaminated streams and unprotected wells. Drinking water from these sources causes a high incidence of disease.
This project is to build a rainwater catchment and storage system to provide clean water for the community group.
The system will consist of a 5,000 liter plastic tank, gutters to collect rainwater, and piping between the gutters and the tank.
The project will help the widows and orphans who are HIV positive to have clean water for drinking and cooking when they come for medication and services. Also receiving benefit will be members of the youth group who come for meetings and activities at the project site.
A platform for the tank will be built next to the main building where all activities and trainings take place. The building has a large roof that will be fitted with the gutters to collect the rain water into the tank.
The platform will be made of cement, sand, and bricks, and will be sunk two feet into the ground for stability.
The work will be done by two skilled masons, assisted by members of the community.
500 people will benefit from the project.

This project will provide a source of clean water for a large number of people who come to the facility for needed services. It uses the appropriate technology under the circumstances, and will have long-lasting impact in reducing illness and saving the time and effort of retrieving water from distant locations.
