Community Description
Morogoro town is located 180 km west of Dar es Salaam. Morogoro is home to several universities, secondary schools, and primary schools.
Mwande Primary School is located 4 km from the center of town. Currently, there are 350 students and 25 teachers. The school offers standards 1-7, and class sizes range from 40 to 61 students. The school has 7 classrooms, and one is being used as an office for the teachers.
The school has concrete water holding tank. However, it is cracked on the bottom. This allows precious water to escape, which can be detrimental during the dry season. Additionally, if the tank is left unrepaired the crack will continue to get worse.
The tank is 5 x 5 x 3 feet, with a capacity of a little over 2,000 liters. Currently, all water is supplied by a tap installed by Morogoro Water Supply.
At this time, the school does not have a handwashing station for use by students and staff.
Project Description
This project is to repair the concrete water holding tank, install a rainwater catchment system, and build a handwashing station, on the grounds of Mwande Primary School.
The school will hire a builder to repair the tank. The first step will be to re-cement the bottom of the tank. Next, the walls of the tank will receive another layer of cement to reduce the possibility of future cracks. The last step will be to replace the rusty, warped cover, which is needed to prevent water contamination.
Additionally, a simple rainwater catchment system will be installed in one of the classrooms. Gutters will be attached to the roof of a roughly 25-foot-long classroom. The gutters will collect rain, and the water will feed into a pipe leading to the holding tank.
A handwashing station will be built adjacent to the bathrooms. The water company previously installed additional underground piping near the bathrooms. However, there is not a tap, so it remains unused. This supply line will be used to provide the water for the handwashing station.
Two short walls made of iron bars and concrete will be built near the water pipes. Next, a washing basin will be built from concrete on top of the two walls. Finally, piping will be attached to bring water from the existing pipes to the basin.
Water Charity funds will be used to purchase concrete, piping, gutters, iron bars, and nails, and to pay for skilled labor. The school will cover any remaining costs.
