Hamba Hamba Borehole Project – Malawi

Location
Hamba Hamba village, Kasinje health center catchment area, Ntcheu district, Central Malawi

Community Description
Hamba Hamba is a ngoni word meaning nomad or wanderer. However, more than 100 people have settled in Hamba Hamba village, and their only source of water for the last four months has been a local pond.

Hamba Hamba has 42 households and Kamphata 77, with two smaller neighboring villages having an additional 90 households. All must currently use the pond for their water needs.

Problem Addressed
The borehole in Hamba Hamba was dug 20+ years ago by a Chinese NGO and is no longer functioning.

The cylinder of the borehole is completely cracked from years of use. In addition, all of the pipes of the 35-meter-deep borehole have cracks. These have been patched and fixed but over time, but cannot be further repaired, and must be replaced.

Project Description
This project is to renovate the borehole in Hamba Hamba. 10 pipes will be replaced. Eight rods are currently in good condition, but 6 rods and 10-rod centralizers are needed. A fulcrum pin, hanger pin and cup seal are also will be replaced.

The borehole committee will purchase new tools to open the borehole, with the cost paid by the community.

The community is providing solvent cement to connect the pipes. Labor and transport into the village (15 km from main road) will be provided by the community along with bricks and cement to fix the skirting around the borehole.

Water Charity funds will be used for the materials.

Project Impact
Around 500 people will benefit from the project, including those living in 44 households in Hamba Hamba, 77 households in Kamphata, and 90 additional households in surrounding areas that use the borehole as their main source of water
